Student 1

Looking at all the issues pertaining to eWaste, there are issues that are related such as Recycling and Big Business, in a big business it is important to reach a good environmentally friendly standard such as ISO-14000. This is evident by things such as regulations of temperature in an office space; it may seem unnecessary but by regulating the temperature you can increase your computer’s endurance and life span.
Not only that, Big Business in the electronic industry are responsible for recycling their products, this spawns new industry such as refurbishing (removing and replacing of data in a computer) and electronic recycling which has become popular in the regions of America.
On the other hand, some companies are ignorant of this and gain negative remarks from environmental NGOs, pressure is a positive input on eWaste since as humans we are becoming more environmentally aware, businesses criticized for their poor environmental standards, strive to improve their public image.
The main problem according to what is seen by research and hindsight into the digital divide, recycling and extraction process, it becomes apparent that the process itself is safe when done properly; the issue is the eWaste that is dumped into less economically developed nations for cheaper extraction, even though this is considered illegal by the Basel convention. EWaste makes it way to shores of countries such as China, India, Africa and also countries such as Estonia Latvia and Lithuania. Extracting and disposing of eWaste material without the protective gear is the main reason it is such an issue today, labourers are hired for cheap pay and conduct hazardous work without major safety precautions and inhale dangerous fumes that come off as a product of their work. The fumes are toxic, old eWaste products use to contain PCB (Polychlorinated biphenyl), which is an organic pollutant, due to this there has been a ban of using PCB for electronic equipment (mostly computers).
Even after theses changes there are still dangerous fumes being emitted from burning of eWaste in order to extract and dismantle the material. In Addition to this the fumes and toxic chemicals, contaminate the environment destroying the ecosystems around the area. Ewaste isn’t decreasing and it seems apparent that the approach to Recycling by leading producers and regulations of imports and exports of such products is crucial to the positive development of eWaste, as humanity becomes are reliant on technology there will be an increasing number of eWaste and the way we handle the recycling process is paramount to the progression of eWaste.

There are many issues with eWaste but the issues that I think are more important issues are hazardous chemicals in eWaste and anyone being able to recover personal information from a computer’s hard drive that hasn’t been removed. I feel these issues are more important and need to be concentrated on because they permanently alter peoples’ lifestyles.
There’s a huge health risk.
eWaste gives off some hazardous chemicals like such as mercury, lead and cadmium which affects the neurological and immune system causing liver damage, cancer, bronchitis.
The chemicals could also get into the soil and groundwater and contaminate it, which eventually makes its way into public water supplies and the food chain.
As for electronics that are incinerated, toxic chemicals are released into the air, therefore contributing to air pollution.
A lot of things can be found out about a person if someone hacks into a recycled computer with data still on the hard drive. Credit card numbers, medical reports, detailed financial information, as well as gigabytes of personal email. People can use the information for their own benefit such as to pay their medical and financial bills.
Each of the issues is connected in some way when they’re talking about the chemicals and the data on the computers and the removal and usage of it.

In my opinion, I think that extending the life of a PC is a great thing to do as Computers, and internet, have taken over a vast majority of today's activities, and could be around forever. Though it may not seem like a lot is being done to extend the life of PC's, there are many technological advances that are doing so, which will definitely help the extension. Though with many viruses that are constantly being made and attacking computers, more money is needed to spend on anti-virus systems such as firewalls and virus scans. Though there are the likes of Macintosh that have no viruses at all that attack the computer, this is a great way for a PC to keep the life extent, because this would mean cheaper maintenance and also in some ways quicker usage.
The other ways that I had mentioned about extending the life of a PC, such as the location of the PC, the wiring, all add up to making a PC as affective as it can be. With care and concern, PCs will be able to last full functioning for about 4-5 years.
Overall i think that computer users should do more then just set up their computer, they should do all that is possible to be able to make their computer as long lasting as possible, this would mean, monthly checks to see how it is functioning, making sure temperatures are at the right digit, checking that the wiring is not tangled or torn, etc. All this can lead to a great life of a PC.

Electronic waste is a major global issue as it affects everyone from computer companies, to computer owners and to the people managing eWaste, and it is also harmful to the environment. Although more countries are becoming aware of this issue, not enough is being done about it.
eWaste is dangerous as computers contain hazardous substances (such as lead) which are responsible for kidney, neurological and liver damage, cancer, bronchitis etc. This would be an issue for people working in or living near the landfills. These toxic chemicals could also contaminate soil and groundwater, and when incinerated these chemicals get released into the air. Overall, eWaste contributes to pollution and is a major environmental issue. China is the most effected country (it takes in 70% of the world’s electronic waste) followed by India and countries in Africa. Because of their cheap labor and lack of health and environmental restrictions, eWaste are shipped over there to be handled or resold. Unless large companies start to see that this is an issue and that they should be more involved in the disposal of eWaste, it will continue to build up in these countries.
eWaste awareness is increasing, but is mostly focused in Asia, Europe and North America. Hardly any action has taken place in Russia, South America and Africa. The UN has outlined goals for recycling, and the recycling of eWaste has been promoted. Manufacturers should be responsible of recycling, more second-hand computers should be donated, people should be aware of the harmful effects of eWaste, and there should be more laws/campaigns placed upon by the government to control the amount being imported and exported. This would reduce eWaste as it prevents dumping, and old products get recycled.
Components such as floppy discs, ink cartridges, CDs, speakers and keyboards could be recycled. Or if a computer gets too old you could extend its life by updating it with programs, software, servers, internet connections etc. to avoid viruses. If a computer is to be donated or recycled, its data must be wiped out completely otherwise others could hack into the hard drive. If more people are aware of this it may also reduce eWaste.

eWaste has become a big problem in a global scale and no one has taken action or realise this problem until not long ago because people in china are getting ill from the toxic chemicals that being released from the dump site of electronic waste.
Having eWaste it is also providing jobs to people for example in China because they are able to take the computer apart and sell the electronic parts and they can also extract gold from it but the thing that the people that are working at the eWaste dump don’t realise is that the electronic equipment are producing toxic chemicals and at the same time that they are inhaling in the air and causing cancer and also damages their livers.
There are two big organisation that are well known called WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) and Guide to a Greener Electronics that are working on reducing and stopping eWaste from damaging anymore of the atmosphere and destroying peoples lives, by doing that they have a recycling factory for Electron Waste and things that you could do to extend a life of a computer. There are big businesses that are involved in this organisation for example Apple and Nokia because they are producing a lot of eWaste and it has made the business have many bad press and it would also make the business look more ethical if it is involved in this organisation. But after doing a lot of research it is a fact that Apple is not reducing the amount of eWaste they are producing since they have joined the organisation.
There is very little chance of stopping eWaste because now electronic equipments and uses are becoming a very big part of our lives but now more people are aware of it and working together to reduce it.

Overall, I would say that eWaste is obviously a major issue in today’s society, especially as technological advances continue, and people feel the need to replace their existing systems. With the current rate of technological growth, computer systems cannot be expected to have a long lifetime, purely because the constant new developments render them obsolete very quickly. Evidently, manufacturers recognise that this is the case, and yet they continue to do nothing to address the growing issue of eWaste. Greenpeace’s ‘test’ of a number of manufacturers’ production and recycling methods serves to highlight this fact, and a number of manufacturers targeted in this review have started to implement ‘greener’ practices. But it is still not enough to confront this issue. Many old computers get shipped off to developing countries – there is big business in old computer systems, components can be broken down to salvage precious metals among other things, and although some may argue that this provides jobs and an income to many poor families living in these countries, these malpractices seriously damage the environment, releasing toxic gases and chemicals due to poor procedures. A possible course of action that manufacturers could take would be collaborating with these developing countries to dispose of the waste properly, still providing jobs for these people, yet not sacrificing the environment. Not only does this method of disposal pose a threat to the environment, it also leaves users vulnerable to identity fraud and electronic thievery. If a hard disc is not wiped correctly, then fragments of data that may contain personal information about the previous user including bank details will remain on it, which can be easily accessed by anybody with the necessary knowledge.
But what can we do? First of all I suggest that computer users need to become aware of the possible criminal issues that they leave themselves at risk to when they do not dispose of their computer properly. Secondly (but this is of no less importance) manufacturers need to be convinced that their actions can cause serious environmental damage, and they need to put programs in place to counter this. Whether they are convinced through the public’s views (and they change their actions in order to boost sales), or they have to be forced to comply through implementation of new laws, this is definitely something that needs to be taken into consideration by the powers that be, and soon.

By outlining the issues, most of them; manufacturers, extracting the ‘gold’, extension of pc life, recycling awareness, digital divide and big business regarding to e-waste are mentioning about recycling waste, keeping the computer longer, big business like apple and how this affects the global by its chemical released.
To begin with, as far as I’m concerned, the major issue would be the people who just dumped the waste rather than recycling it. This is because the waste will result the pollution and destroying of the environment. In other words, computers contain hazardous components which are dangerous and can be very harmful to people such as the heavy metals, bromine content, etc. It will cause the chemical gas which rises up into the atmosphere and creates acid rain or greenhouse affects. As well as this, you can link this with extension of pc life because if you look after your computers well; then it will not have to be recycled and dumping will not occur, so those harmful gas would be reduced. Moreover, recycling awareness and extracting the ‘gold’ could be considered as a similar issue or very close as the recycling awareness is about the recycling of waste and the aware of recycling where extracting the ‘gold’ is displaying about the recycling computer’s components, so both issues are to do with recycling.
However, some issue can be said as not very important as well as have been ignored. This is the digital divide which mentioned the data on computers on which some people may argue that it is a big problem for them because data is being hacked or stolen. As for me, I strongly disagree in the way that people should keep their own data well by encrypting it, have a password to keep it safe and always have a back up of it. If you can do that, then it is impossible for your data to be hacked or stolen because you keep it secure and you the only one who can access it.
In conclusion, in my opinion, many facts that have been raised by eWaste are causing pollution to the global and will make a disaster in a future. Even though, there are some advantages of this waste and big businesses and most people in this world definitely can’t live without computer, we can still reduce it as much as we can; to decrease waste and all of the harmful components as the world’s pollution can be erase little by little.

Electronic Waste Recycling is now a well known topic issue that is discussed globally. The innovations of computer-electronics grew rapidly over the century. Speaking principally, the human popularity desire to update or revolutionize their electronic products, to catch up with trend.
The situation to this matter is regarding to “How the global society will carry out of the elderly electronics?”
The dilemma is that, people do not identify how to liberate these electronics are and therefore, subsequently sent all the electronics into the waste, or sent to Lower Developed Countries for dumping.
This therefore leads into nuisance to the world’s environment. The electronic mechanism itself, consists of thousands components which are complicated to be recycled.
In LEDC countries e.g. India and China, they benefit this from extracting gold, platinum etc. from the micro-chips. Conversely, they don’t realize this job to be dangerous; burning the components having no safety considerations, creating a poisonous atmosphere which they inhale. Misleadingly, leads to a lower life expectancy rate, cancer and death.
In the environmental world, the left over’s’ of the chips are then dumped into the rivers, and most importantly, the waters changed into acidic, and therefore leading to acid rain.

Without delay, this issue needs to sort out. Everyone in the society will need to work together and reach the goals: reduce to the minimal rate of electronic waste dumping and the health issues in the Lower Economic Developed Societies, therefore bringing us a better environment.
From today onwards, the government has introduced new laws into this situation; persuading everyone to deliver all old electronic components back to the company. Therefore, the useless electronics can be recycled and upgraded into newer products.
Essentially, this will not harm our society and also these recycled products can be donated to the poorer society. Where people cannot afford computers and also give them a chance to also benefit from these products.
In conclusion, the topic on electronic waste has increased the knowledge and opinion of all electronic users. It is now a well-known concern, because of the speeding innovative in technology worldwide.

Most of the issues referring to e-waste mentions about dumping e-wastes to poor countries, how it effects the environment and how e-waste could be recycled. The problem gets even worse as the technology develops, since citizens around the world used different types of technology to suit their lifestyles. Many of them didn't realise that throwing away their unused hi-tech products such as computers, televisions, mobile phones can effect the whole world’s environment and people in poor countries that have to suffer from air pollution.
There are many isssues that have arisen which are important but the most important issue would be recycling/dumping e-waste. This is because e-waste has many hazardous chemicals (in the computer) which can cause air pollution as the chemicals can escape into the atmosphere. Also, those toxic chemicals escaped into the atmosphere can also cause global warming which is a very serious problem that many organisations around the world had been dealing with. Apart from this, it can lead to health problems and serious diseases for example cancer, liver damge, etc. that will lead to death. What people could do to prevent e-waste being increased is to re-use those hi-tech products if it still can be used or donate those items (eg. computers) to schools.
The least important issue in global environment terms would be the data stored on computers, because if this is compared to other issues, this problem can be easier to solve since it’s not as serious as other issues which can effect the global environment. It is a problem for many people in terms of Identity Theft (Identity theft doesn’t effect the global environment), so we should all ensure that all personal details are permanently deleted by using wipe out programs before donating or dumping them. However, data stored on computers doesn’t harm the environment since it can be dealt within the country.

All the issues that were raised concerning eWaste are all valid, but more some than others. Probably the least valid would be extending the life of the PC. This is valid, but to tackle the concern that is eWaste, knowing how long a computer lasts and when to change really isn’t a great deal, though knowing might help, but in the slightest. Recycling Awareness is valid because it is giving an overview of what different organizations and different countries are doing to tackle eWaste. Is a promising sign, because it shows that people are concerned and want to do something about it. But from what was presented in the Recycling Awareness, it clearly shows that not enough organizations and not enough countries are dealing with the problem, more and more need to get involved if eWaste is to be dealt with completely. Manufacturers issue was also hugely valid because it shows what the manufacturers are doing and what they are not. They are ultimately some what responsible for eWaste because it is their products that contain the harmful substances that cause harm to humans and the environment. It is in their best interest to deal with eWaste or they will ultimately loss sales of their products.
Digital divide is a concern because part of it shows which countries are most affected, like India and China where most eWaste is dumped and expected to deal with what is left for them to deal with.

After I have read the analysis from different views and topics I have found out that some are relating. Firstly the key things that lead to an electronic wastes is that people are changing their electronics which includes computers, laptops through to mp3 players more and more often as technology is improving everyday. The essence of technology is improving and our habits have change. Nowadays people rely more on technology rather than hand manual or writing things out themselves which cannot be saved nor can be edited. As technology is improving and the market is getting larger and larger people will now find a way into the market for E.g. it is believe that viruses comes from the companies who manufactures the anti-virus and spywares therefore if the user doesn’t want their computers to get infected they must buy the program and if the they don’t have the program in time, their computers will be ruined and will need to clean everything or even buy a new one, moreover this will lead to the main issue of e-waste, as computers can be destroy easier and is now cheaper to buy, their will be more and more electronic wastes and more products to launch to the market. Concerning about the global issues several countries e.g. china have introduce anew policy which is “control the use of certain hazardous chemicals in electrical products” however India (less economically developed country) still have no policies on garbage pollution. As a result of some countries not trying to help out, the pollution in the world will increased with no signs of stopping and this will lead to even more of a disaster. The effects of global warming will be maximized and habitats will be destroyed if this issue isn’t fixed.
Ultimately after I have weighed up all the issues I am very certain to say that e-waste and recycling is a very strong issue which is contributing to the world in many bad ways and if it isn’t going to stop soon, it will surely lead to many disaster therefore I think it should be solve as fast as possible so there is less harm as possible to humans and animals.

Clean up of Tower – After a while dust will gather within your hard drive it is good to get a dust blower to get rid of this. All you need is a screwdriver. And also remember to pull the plug before you start. Start check: It is important to check the things that makes noise, which can the fan the monitor or the hard drive or even cpu. Also if you hear a weird noise mean that something is going. checking updates online: checking the things online. There are many updates on all products very now and then. It is important for you to get updates so you can be sure that your product is up to date and if there anything wrong you can tell the company and hopefully they will fix this for free. And checking things online allows a feedback of your product, so it also checks if there’s anything wrong with it. islotating the computer : disconnect your computer completely so the cpu is at rest and this will help it to last longer and it will cool down if its was working to hard. cleaning and removal of temporary files : These are files gathered when you are looking at website using the internet. It should delete these files every now and then. The annoying thing is that ounces you delete them the history of the site you have visited will be gone from the list. But this helps on loading pages and also clears some space for your hard drive. Also some of the files have viruses so datelining them is necessary. Decrementing and restarting :Decrementing and restarting your computer will test its ability to restart, any wrong with your computer will testes and it will give you feedback that will also tell you how to overcome those problems. Updates : Keep everything updated.
